about

Dave Haigler
Attorney, Mediator, Arbitrator, and Political Activist

Dave Haigler was active in the Republican Party for two decades but began dabbling with the Democrats in 2000 and decided to switch parties for good in 2003 after the Bush justification for and handling of the Iraq war proved questionable.  He also has opposed the Republican agenda on tort reform, feeling it harms the victim of medical malpractice and the little guy who gets hurt on the job.

PUBLICATIONS:  DURING 1982-86, AFTER APPEARING ON CBS EVENING NEWS, DAVE DEFENDED ABOUT THREE DOZEN HOME-SCHOOL CASES AND SOME OTHER RELIGIOUS-LIBERTY DEFENSE CASES, AND PUBLISHED A LAWYER'S MANUAL ON HOME-SCHOOL DEFENSE AND A MONTHLY COLUMN ON FIRST-AMENDMENT CASES FOR THE COUNSEL OF CHALCEDON IN ATLANTA.  HE WAS SELECTED FOR THE 1995 WHO'S WHO IN EXECUTIVES & PROFESSIONALS.  HE IS NOW WRITING AN EPIC HISTORICAL NOVEL, ABOUT WHICH A FEATURE ARTICLE APPEARS HERE.

  1. A Home School History Lesson, by Tim Lambert, President of the Texas Home school Coalition, and former member of the Republican National Executive Committee.  Lambert says, "In [1982], the Richardson ISD took the Short family to court for educating their daughters at home. Dave Haigler, the lawyer for the Shorts, was interviewed on the CBS evening news after the judge had ruled against the family; however, the next morning, the justice of the peace reversed himself and ruled in favor of the Short family. The legal argument of vagueness of the law (Haigler pioneered) became the standard defense used by home schoolers all over the country."
  2. Haigler Chairs State Bar Grievance Disbarment Panel, by Anthony Wilson, Abilene Reporter News, October 23, 1997.  This case later disbarred former County Judge James McMillon.
  3. Haigler Lobbies INS Against Fee for Rotary Exchange Students, by Rotary International District 7150, regarding proposal in February 2000 drafted by Dave Haigler, Abilene, Texas Tri-Club YEO & District 5790 YE Committee member and a lawyer/ administrative-law specialist.
  4. March 9 primaries take shape, by Jerry Daniel Reed / Reporter-News Staff Writer, January 3, 2004.  Reed says, "Some surprises emerged on the last day for filing to run in the March 9 primaries in Taylor County.  Abilene attorney Dave Haigler, long a staunch conservative Republican, filed for Taylor County Democratic Party chairman after incumbent Bobby Clark chose not to seek another term.  Haigler revealed his break with his former party and with the Bush administration in a column Sunday in the Abilene Reporter-News. He accused the Bush administration of deceiving the nation in its stated reasons for going to war in Iraq and endorsed the candidacy of Democratic frontrunner Howard Dean, the former Vermont governor."
  5. Haigler Heads Taylor County Democratic Executive Committee, by Royse Kerr, March 15, 2004.
